How to convert a decimal to a fraction
- Write the decimal over 1, then multiply top and bottom by 10 for each digit after the decimal point: 0.625 = 625/1000.
- Simplify by the greatest common factor (125): 625/1000 = 5/8.
Repeating decimals
For 0.333…, let x = 0.333…; then 10x = 3.333…, so 9x = 3 and x = 1/3. For two repeating digits, multiply by 100 instead. The converter does this for any repeating part you put in brackets.

Repeating decimals
A repeating decimal like 0.333… is exactly 1/3, but 0.33 typed as a plain decimal is 33/100. For measurements, choose a denominator you can use, like eighths or sixteenths of an inch.
Fractions back to decimals
Divide the top by the bottom: 5/8 = 5 ÷ 8 = 0.625. Fractions whose bottom number only has 2s and 5s as factors (2, 4, 5, 8, 10, 16, 20, 25…) give decimals that end; others, like 1/3 or 2/7, repeat forever. The converter works in both directions.
