How to calculate cumulative GPA

Your cumulative (overall) GPA is the average of every graded credit you have taken, so a new semester moves it in proportion to how many credits it adds. Multiply each GPA by its credits to get quality points, add them, and divide by all the credits.

Cumulative GPA = (current GPA × credits so far + semester GPA × semester credits) ÷ (credits so far + semester credits)

Worked example

You have a 3.20 GPA over 45 credits and earn a 3.70 this semester over 15 credits.

  • Quality points so far: 3.20 × 45 = 144.0
  • This semester: 3.70 × 15 = 55.5
  • Total: 199.5 ÷ 60 credits = 3.33

How much can one semester raise your GPA?

Less every year. Early on, a strong semester moves your GPA a lot; once you have 90+ credits, even straight A’s add only a little. Switch to “GPA needed for a goal” to see what your target requires. If the answer is above 4.0, the target cannot be reached in one semester, and the calculator tells you how many semesters of straight A’s it would take.

Credits so farCurrent GPAOne 15-credit semester of 4.0 raises it to
153.003.50
303.003.33
603.003.20
903.003.14

Tips

  • Use the credits printed on your transcript; transferred credits often don’t count toward GPA.
  • Retaken classes may replace the old grade; if so, remove the old class’s credits first.

Questions people ask

How do I find my credits so far?

Look for “GPA hours” or “quality hours” on your transcript or student portal, not “earned hours”, which can include pass/fail and transfer credits.

Can I raise my GPA from 2.5 to 3.0 in one semester?

It depends on your credits. With 30 credits at 2.5, one 15-credit semester would need a 4.0 to reach 3.0. Enter your numbers in “GPA needed for a goal” to see your exact target.

What is CGPA?

CGPA means cumulative grade point average. It is the same idea as cumulative GPA; some countries use a 10-point scale instead of 4.0.
