How the conversion works
There is no single official formula: GPA is built from letter grades, and schools draw the percentage cut-offs differently. This converter uses the common US bands above and places your number proportionally inside its band. A 3.3 GPA sits at B+, so it converts to about 87–89%; a 3.0 is about 83–86%.
Because the bands are uneven, the result is an estimate. When an application asks for a percentage, check whether the institution gives its own conversion table and use that first.
10-point CGPA (India and others)
On 10-point scales, a widely quoted rule from CBSE is percentage ≈ CGPA × 9.5. Universities often publish their own formula, which takes priority. This converter covers the US 4.0 scale only.
Why there is no single official conversion
GPA and percentage scales were designed separately, so every school or country maps them a little differently. A 3.0 might mean 83–86% in one US high school and 80–84% in another. Universities abroad often use their own tables, and India’s CBSE uses CGPA × 9.5.
What to put on an application
- Use the scale printed on your transcript if there is one.
- If the form asks for a percentage and your school only gives GPA, write the GPA and the scale (for example “3.6 / 4.0”) and note the conversion you used.
- Never round up: admissions offices check transcripts.
